Student voices

What changed for them.

Four students share how their Spanish has grown. Their original words appear alongside English translations.

“Aprendí maneras más elaboradas de expresarme. He seguido tomando clases con Julio después de terminar mi máster para mantener a flote lo que aprendí. El cuaderno que crea es un recurso útil para estudiar fuera de clase”.

English translation “I learned more sophisticated ways to express myself. I kept taking lessons with Julio after finishing my master’s degree to keep up what I’d learned. The notebook he creates is a useful resource for studying outside class”.

06 — Hi, I’m Julio

A teacher, a conversation, and room to grow.

I’m Julio Flores. I have a master’s degree in Education and a bachelor’s degree in Hispanic Literature. I’ve taught Spanish to learners of different ages, countries, and levels for over 13 years.

I teach Spanish as a foreign language at the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Center for Foreign Students (CEPE). I’m also an instructor for the Coursera course Basic Spanish for Medical Care and the creator of the podcasts Cognados and Gol Para.

My lessons bring together conversation, grammar, Mexican culture and society, literature, art, and materials designed around you. Technology supports our work, but the relationship between teacher and learner stays at the center.

Start learning

Before we begin

Questions you might have.

If yours isn’t here, write to me. A short conversation is the best way to see how we can work together.

Ask me something else →
01Can I start as a complete beginner?

Yes. We can start with your very first words and build a useful foundation at a comfortable pace. Since I’ve studied several languages myself, I understand what it’s like to rely on another language at first.

02How long will it take me to speak Spanish?

You’ll speak from your first lesson, even if you begin with short phrases and plenty of support. Becoming comfortable in conversation depends on your starting point, consistency, and exposure outside class. We’ll set realistic, observable goals.

03How many lessons should I take each week?

For most people, I recommend one or two lessons a week, plus small moments of practice between sessions. A sustainable rhythm matters more than a short burst of intensive study.

04Do you teach children?

Individual lessons are designed mainly for teens and adults. I work well with young people from around age 13; for younger children, we should first discuss their needs, independence, and interests.

05Do I need to be good with technology?

No. You only need to join a Zoom call and open simple links or documents. We’ll use a personalized Google Doc, and I’ll help you with any unfamiliar tools.

06Do you offer in-person lessons?

For now, all individual lessons take place online via Zoom. This lets me work with students in different countries and keep your materials together in one digital space.

07Are materials included?

Yes. Lessons include personalized materials, vocabulary and corrections in your Google Doc, practice activities, and, when helpful, shadowing audio and short missions between sessions.

08Which variety of Spanish will I learn?

Mexican Spanish is my starting point. You’ll also learn to recognize other varieties and choose how to express yourself depending on the situation and the person you’re talking to.

09What happens in our first lesson?

We’ll talk about your goals, interests, and experiences with Spanish. We’ll identify what you can already do, choose priorities, and begin working together right away.

10Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes. You can cancel or reschedule through Appointlet at least six hours in advance. With less notice, the session counts as used, except for the circumstances described in the service terms.

Let’s talk about your Spanish

Tell me what you’d like to achieve.

Share a little about yourself, your experience with Spanish, and what you’d like to work on. I’ll reply personally by email.

I usually reply within 24 to 48 hours.
